Is this normal? It’s supposed to be a pork katsu don. I have no idea what I’m looking at.

I don’t know about normal, but did they cook the pork with eggs?
Edit to say oyakodon is chicken cooked with eggs and more on rice. Maybe similar

    Looks like katsudon to me
The fried pork is cut, stewed just a bit with onions in broth, and then scrambled egg is poured on top and kinda soaks up the broth.

While the components seem to be there, it’s a bloody awful attempt at katsudon.

Takeout/delivery food doesn’t ever look as appetizing as when it’s eaten fresh at the kitchen where it’s prepared.

I love me some katsudon…have eaten my share living in Japan 😂😂 Think this particular dish…. there’s just a LOT of egg. The katsudon ive eaten always had less egg. Even if it was take away…the egg isn’t always set to the point of looking like an omelette.

While I understand restaurants sometimes have their unique take on a dish…this doesn’t look “right” (for me)

Yeah that is a legit katsudon, maybe messy-looking but the flavor should more than make up for it 😉

Add some green onion and pickled ginger if you have it

Sometimes, the eggs are cooked in a broth/dashi type of affair. It gives the egg loads of flavour and fluffiness, but the finished product can look rather unappealing.

  9. Looks like it’s been sitting for awhile. Expect if it was

Mexican cooks working hard in the kitchen

  11. Seems like the maker was in a rush. It looks completely normal, only a little messy.

This is a pretty terrible example Yes it is rice, scrambled egg and a fried pork cutlet but the cutlet should be crispy and on top.

If you didn’t tell me this was katsudon I would have a hard time guessing what it is

  14. Yourdailyimouto

Yes, especially when you realize that this is one of many reasons why most Japanese restaurant don’t provide takeouts

  15. No it’s not normal, it’s missing the onion. If it’s Japan it would also normally be kept separate to the rice till you’re ready to eat so the sauce doesn’t make the rice soggy before you eat.

  16. Not to be confused with Don (Ton) katsu, which is Just pork cutlet. The don in your dish is from donburi which is typically something over a bowl of rice. The Don/Ton in the katsu (cutlet) dish is for pork.

    Egg-covered pork cutlet rice bowl?

    卵とじカツ丼?

Looks about right, although I’m guessing it’s not a great one or the white balance is doing it dirty.

Did you try looking it up before ordering?

This is definitely the right dish preparation. Not top tier, but technically correct.
